DISTRICT LEVEL STATE OF ENVIRONMENT REPORTS

The decentralized system of administration post amendment 73 (panchayati raj institutions) has made it more important and relevant that environmental issues be discussed and addressed at the local level. The planning process should appreciate district level interventions by participating in the whole process and including the process in their policies. This would certainly need sensitization of policy makers and implementers at the district level.

The district level SoEs would address environmental concerns specific to a district and hold data, which would be relevant and useful for the policy and decision makers at district level. Once the project delivers its outputs the district officials would be able to see a handy, analyzed and user-friendly resource book of their district. They will get information about the strengths and opportunities of their districts as well as the weaknesses, limitations, environmental concerns and threats. This would help them tremendously in taking informed decisions and addressing poverty vis-à-vis environmental concerns with much more clarity.
