The numerous vertical lines emphasize the multi-dimensional character of the problems of environmental planning and coordination. The four horizontal strata are indicative of the main resource groups: terrestrial, aquatic, biotic and solar. Afforestation & Creation of Buffer Zones

In order to prevent encroachment, human settlements, movement of the cattles and cultivation etc., buffer zones have been created particularly in the Western, Southern and Northern fringe area of the lake besides this intensive plantation has been carried out in the catchment area of the Upper lake to control and check soil erosion. The species selected in this project are mostly Bio-mass producing and medicinal plants. The plants have been carefully selected not only considering type of the soil, water and climatic conditions of the area but also taking into account of their economic and high medical values. Under this sub- project more than 16.3 lakhs plants have been planted in 936 hectare and land. In the programme under social forestry, about 2.06 lacs of plants have been distributed and planted. The afforestation in this catchment area has proved successful in checking these activities and also reducing the flow of silt from this portion of catchment area into the lake
