Concept of the Logo: The logo is symbolic of various facets of the environment. The circular Form conveys its universal quality. The numerous vertical lines emphasize the multi-dimensional character of the problems of environmental planning and coordination. The four horizontal strata are indicative of the main resource groups: terrestrial, aquatic, biotic and solar. The graded vertical ascending strips suggest the yearning of man for a better life in a cleaner environment.

Prevention of Pollution (Sewage Scheme) & Construction of Garland Drain

The aim of this sub project is to provide an improved sewage system in the areas which drain into upper and lower lake of Bhopal so that sewage and waste water from these areas which are a major cause of pollution in the lakes could be collected and diverted away for treatment. Hygienic environment can be created by giving good sanitation facilities. At present, the city does not have any organized sewerage network facilities to old Bhopal city, and other areas falling in the catchment area of lakes. The lakes are situated within the city and a number of ward or colonies contribute sewage and sulage flowing through open drains which ultimately finds its way into the lakes. This sub-project envisages laying of sewerage net work system, construction of a treatment plant at a village near Bhopal and diversion of sewage towards the proposed treatment plant. About 62 kms sewerage pipeline and 23 kms long force mains are being laid in 23 municipal wards of the city which is divided in 3 networks of Gandhinagar, Maholi and Kotra. Four sewerage treatment plants are also being constructed in these areas.

The Garland drain sub-project envisages the construction of a garland drain around the lower lake for catching non point source of pollution. The Lower lake mostly receives its inflows from 28 channels and drains. In this sub-project it is proposed to control inflow of sewage and sullage into the lower lake by provision of surface drains/pipe drains connected to the sewage system which will divert this water away from the lake and to prevent entry of silt into the lake coming through different streams joining the lake due to the general slope of ground near the immediate peripheral area of the lakes, pollutants mixed in the rain water and drain water etc. find their way into the lake. Garland drains are to be constructed, mainly around the lower lake. The works of Garland drain around lower lake from Ginnori Temple to Ginnori SPH, Police Officer Mess to Jehangirabad sewerage collection chamber via Patra Filteration Plant to Patra SPH are in progress.

All the sewerage through sewage pipelines will be sent to pump houses. Laying of sewerage pipe line has been awarded to M/s L & T Ltd.. In the above areas sewerage pipelines of length of about 55 k.m. has been laid. A total of 8 new pump houses at Sehore naka, Tilak Nagar, Ahmedabad, Khanugaon, MLB, Banganga, Vardhman & Kotra are being constructed and 2 existing pump houses at Laukhedi & Patra are being renovated. The construction of Sewerage Pump Houses awarded to M/s Engineering Projects India Ltd. The construction of pump houses at Khanugaon, Sehore Naka, Kotra are completed while the 75% work has been completed in Tilak Nagar and MLB SPH. The work of Banganga, Vardhman and Ahmedabad pump houses are in progress. Out of the targeted 23.58 km forcemains pipeline about 22 km pipelines have already been laid. This work under this sub-project is likely to be completed by Dec. 2001. The STP construction work at Kotra, Gondarmau and Maholi is near completion and about 75% of the work has been completed at the Badwai STP. A total of 54.06 million litre /day of sewage will be treated in all the above four STPs
