Prevention of Pollution from Dhobighat

This sub-project at Lower lake incorporate the work of shifting of washing bay from the existing location as well as slums from the banks of Lower lake and development of land so vacated. Presently the washermen settlements are concentrated near Kilol park, Gokhale hostel & SBI training centre Khatlapura. High quantity of wastes specially detergents, chemicals and furnace ashes enter into lower lake daily due to the washing activities at washing bay. To prevent the degradation of lower lake it is necessary to remove the washing bay along with settlement from the shoreline of the lower lake. Attempts are being made to motivate the washermen community for voluntary shifting. The site for shifting has been selected and it is situated on the down streamside of lake a nallah named Patra is flowing with sufficient open spaces of lands along its banks. To accommodate the washermen, infrastructure facilities for the colony like construction of roads, water supply system, sewerage system, street lighting etc. will be provided. Total 10.50 acres, land has been made available at Roshanbagh and Kewdawallah bagh near Patra nallah for new washer bay relocation. Preparatory work has already been done in Kewdawala Bagh for rehabilitation of washermen in first phase. In Second phase 90% work of construction of washing bay, foot bridge, development of plots and laying of pipelines at Roshanbagh and Kewdawallahbagh has already been completed while the construction of overhead tank and rufning filter are ikely to be completed by May 2002. The washerman from existing washing bay shall be rehabilitated soon to new sites and the process of shifting the same is in progress.
